Tibet is a land where historical leaders are measured by their spiritual attainment and biographies are chronicles that span a multiplicity of lifetimes. It is an acknowledged fact that such extraordinary personages return again and again to earth as reincarnated emanations committed to help improve conditions for humanity by their teachings and their works. For Tibetans a well established system for locating such incarnations exists, and there are hundreds of recognized reincarnations in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Out of these only a very few hold exalted positions, positions from which they have exerted historical significance for centuries.
